A wildlife expert believes there shouldn't be any environmental issues around Guinness' plans to use old kegs as Christmas tree fertiliser.

Diageo recalled hundreds of thousands of kegs of beer, stout and ale.

So as opposed to getting them go to waste, the company will distribute them into environmental projects.

The kegs hadn't been used as a result of pubs and restaurants being shut due to lockdown.

Wildlife expert Eanna Ni Lamhna explains why it'll make good fertiliser.

"With the greatest respect to Guinness - it's mostly water."

"The water is always good for trees."

"Particularly this year when everywhere has been so dry they needs lots and lots of moisture."

"The water from the Guinness will act as water will anywhere."

"It's malted barley, it's hops and these are plant extracts."

Eanna has also addressed concerns about other wildlife around.

"[People might say] Oh no wouldn't pouring the beer kill all the slugs and snails!"

"However you're not looking at slugs and snails on Christmas trees really."

"They're not lovely soft succulents in your garden, they have strong little hard leaves."

"So I don't see any problem with this."

"Obviously people who drink Guinness don't want to see it all poured over Christmas trees."

"So I'd imagine this will be a once off."
