"Let Nanny Go To The Prom" - that's the message from the internet to Eufaula high school in Alabama in the US. It started after the school refused to let Bryce Maine to bring his Granny, Catherine, to the ball because they said they were worried she would bring alcohol and give it to the underage students. The school also said it could open the door for other students to bring similar dates as a joke and turn the event into a sham.
The 18 year old had already asked his grandmother, as she had never been to a prom of her own. The teenager assumed it wouldn't be a problem and Catherine had already said yes and bought a dress when the refusal came through.
The decision sparked a social media campaign after Bryce's cousin lashed out on social media:
The Facebook post has now been shared nearly 2,000 times and inspired the #letnannygotoprom hashtag.
"My blood is boiling right now," Catherine Maine said in the post. "My little cousin Bryce wanted to take our Grandma to his senior Prom since she has never been. Well after she done bought her dress and made plans, the principal decided that they cannot do that anymore... Like really?! Eufaula High School let my Grandma go to Prom!"
In an answering statement, the school's Principal Steve Hawkins said: "Safety of students and staff is the first and most important of the many tasks of a school administrator. For the 10 years I have been high school principal, we have denied requests each year from students asking to bring older dates to prom. We do not chance leaving any stone un-turned when it comes to safety. Most high schools have an age limit for prom attendees."
