The BBC has announced it will be screening a special episode of Sherlock before the next full series.
Filming on the one-off will begin in January 2015, with work then expected to start on the much-anticipated series four.
It's widely tipped Moriarty - played by Dublin actor Andrew Scott - will make a return to the show, after appearing after the credits on the closing episode of series three.
Sherlock co-creator Steven Moffat says “A special, plus a new series of three episodes – it’s a record-breaking run! Of course, it’s far too early to say what’s coming, but we’re reasonably confident that the very next thing to happen to Sherlock and John, is the very last thing you’d expect.”
Mark Gatiss, the show’s co-creator, writer and executive producer, said the new series would go into “deeper and darker water than ever before”.
Actress Amanda Abbington who was introduced as Watson's wife in the last series has reacted to the news on Twitter.
A special and a fourth. Immensely excited!
