Sam Smith has picked up three prizes at the Billboard Music Awards in the US - thanking his fans using flash cards in a surprise video message. The star's recovering from throat surgery and could not attend the Las Vegas ceremony.
Taylor Swift swept the board winning in eight of the 14 categories in which she was nominated, including the night's biggest honour of top artist.
One Direction came away with two awards. Coldplay won in the rock album category for Ghost Stories.
