We shared a story a few days ago about a flower girl and page boy, in Britain, marrying 20 years later and it turns out it happened to one of our listeners as well. Karen Lee got in touch with us when she read the story.
She was kind enough to share her story with us. Brace yourselves folks this one will bring a tear to your eye.
"This story can get somewhat confusing so to start my husband's name is Darragh Lee. My maiden name is Karen Delaney. My uncle, Harry, married Darragh's aunt, Mary and we were flower girl and page boy at their wedding in Raheny on 2nd July 1981. I was 2 1/2 years and Darragh was 4 1/2 years."
"Over the years, I had heard about Darragh here and there through my uncle, his aunt and our mutual cousin Paul but we had never met. I went to college and he went to college. He had a long term girlfriend, I had a couple of serious relationships lasting a few years.
Then I had a daughter and her Dad and I separated a year after she was born. I was 29 years old and the last thing on my mind was to meet anyone else. My focus was my daughter and providing for her.
Then my uncle Harry threw a party to celebrate his 50th birthday and all of my family and all of Mary's family were invited along. Darragh (unknowst to me) wasn't all that interested in heading along but his family insisted that he attend.
As soon as he walked into the venue, I instantly recognised him. Yes, he had changed. His hair was longer, he was a few foot taller and he had gained some weight! But the cows lick, the blue eyes and his lovely smile remained. And I got flutters.
Anyhow, we were reintroduced and the next week, I found myself meeting him in the Shelbourne on our first date. 6 months later he flew me to New York for my 30th birthday and proposed to me in Central Park on 1st November 2007.
We got married in Spanish Point, County Clare on 22nd August 2009 surrounded by lots of familiar faces and my daughter, Lucie as our flower girl. Our daughter, Eithne, was born on 26th June 2011.
It took a while to find him again and I kissed a few frogs but it was all worth it. Darragh is my best pal, a wonderfully supportive husband and Dad and Stepdad, and an all-round nice guy!"
