An immunologist says it would be unimaginable to waste hundreds of thousands of AstraZeneca vaccines.

The National Immunisation Advisory Committee is expected to decide by tomorrow whether the vaccine should be given to younger people.

A lot of crucial decisions need to be made by NIAC in the coming days.

Like whether the Johnson and Johnson and AstraZeneca vaccine should be given to younger people to speed up the rollout.

It’s currently limited to over 50s over concerns about blood clots and this is leading to an oversupply.

Professor of immunology at Maynooth University, Paul Moynagh, says these vaccines can’t be wasted.

Many immunologists have also called on NIAC to consider whether those in their 60s, who were given AstraZeneca, should be topped up with a different vaccine.

Only a quarter of this age cohort are fully vaccinated.

Immunologist Professor Luke O’Neill says there’s no issue with mixing vaccines.

The Government originally aimed to have 82 per cent of the adult population administered with at least one vaccine by this Wednesday, June the 30th.

It looks like that figure will now be closer to 70 per cent.
