Folks,
98FM’s weekly sports show “Now That’s What I Call Sport” airs every Sunday morning from 9-10am.
Presented by myself Johnny Lyons, this week’s show broadcast on Sunday March 1st features the following guests :
- Keith Wood
They sure don’t come much bigger than a clash against the Auld Enemy – Ireland taking on England in the Six Nations at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday.
It mightn’t be the most thrilling attacking wise of Championships but there’s no question you could cut through the tension at the top of the pile with a rather large scimitar.
Ireland and England have the best coaches in the business in Joe Schmidt and Stuart Lancaster (you know I’ve never met Lancaster but I’d run through a brick wall if he asked me- that’s the kind of intangible motivational power he has) and there won’t be much in it either at the Aviva or at the business end of the Championship at the top of the table between these two teams.
Woody - a man who put his head in where it hurt on many an occasion against the Sassenachs – points out where this game will be won and lost.
- Jonathan Garth
Well well well what an excellent start to the Cricket World Cup for Ireland!
A well deserved four wicket victory over the West Indies was followed by a hands over the eyes success over the United Arab Emirates.
Some are now thinking this cricket World Cup lark is a walk in the park! (Eh but not the English - note to Andy Ashton – England lost their opening two games)!
The victories have come about through traditional Irish traits of putting the head down and toughing it out through the lean times allied to top class fielding and a batting line up which goes right through the team.
Now we’ll need all those qualities and more against a strong South African side who have the ability to dish out a reality check to us.
The Proteas were humbled by India and – fronted by the pace of the world’s greatest bowler Dale Steyn and the metronomic strokeplay of the world’s number one one day batsman AB De Villiers – a backlash is very much on the cards against the Irish.
Jonny – himself born in Johannesburg – airs his unbiased views on how this one pans out and the crucial must win tie against Zimbabwe next weekend.
- Conor Niland
Always a pleasure to welcome the former Irish number one tennis player live into the 98 studios (his second time in The Malt House trivia fans).
The first time was four years ago after he became the first Irishman to qualify for the first round at Wimbledon where he narrowly lost in a five setter to the Frenchman Adrian Mannarino who now sits just outside the Top 30.
Back then he missed out on a lucrative second round tie with Roger Federer.
But he kinda made up for that when he also qualified for the US Open where he met and lost to Novak Djokovic – food poisoning on the day meant he was less effective than he could have been.
Just a year later Conor was forced to retire at the too young age of 30 as hip pain became too much to endure.
Niland moved into coaching and is now the non playing captain of Ireland’s Davis Cup team.
He pops into us to discuss Ireland’s chances of beating Belarus in our Euro/African Zone 2 tie in Castleknock next weekend – our chances not helped by the absence of our top two players James McGee and Louk Sorensen.
Competitions:
- League of Ireland season ticket for a club of your choice
- Tix to see Ireland against Belarus in the Davis Cup at Castleknock next weekend
Thanks,
Johnny.
