Martin Tyler has told 98FM’s Jamie Moore the inside story behind his stellar career, calling some of the biggest games in football history.

Reflecting on his beginnings in the world of football commentary, Tyler revealed he wasn’t always so confident behind the microphone “I was very scared when I first started. The excitement was being given a chance back in 1974. It was a very tense day, my first game. All those early games you’re just terrified of making mistakes.”

The veteran commentator managed to overcome those early fears, going on to become the voice of Sky Sports’ Premier League coverage from its inception in 1992.

Tyler left ITV for Satellite TV just prior to the Premier League’s first season and says his timing couldn’t have been better “It was a case of being in the right place at the right time. I’m very grateful for Sky continuing to show faith in me. If the viewers like the way we cover the games then I hope to be able to continue doing it in that style”

Aside from his weekly duties in the commentary booth, Tyler has also been a part of EA Sports’ FIFA video game since 2008.

Martin revealed it takes a full three days to record his takes for each new edition of the game, but that his skills behind the control pad are not as good as those behind the microphone.

“I’m hopeless at the game! It comes out every year. I play my son, I go one up and I lose 2-1. It’s the same every year, it’s almost a ritual.”
