The figures come from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre.

Its believed the surge in STI cases this year is down to social venues reopening and more people getting checked.

The number of sexually transmitted cases reported between January and March 2022 is 45 per cent higher than the same period last year.

The number of cases of HIV has seen a higher surge of 84 per cent.

It's thought a significant proportion of this group were previously diagnosed with the disease in another country.

The rates of gonorrhoea and chlamydia are also up significantly compared to the same months in 2021.

Rebecca Connelly of SpunOut.ie says poor sexual health education could be contributing to the problem:

"I think a lot of the time, young people are really let down by the sexual education that they receive."

"People often can misunderstand how STIs can be contracted or how they can be spread."
