Gardai have confirmed to 98FM News that they're investigating reports of a sex assault in the city centre.
It’s alleged that a homeless woman was attacked in Stephen’s Green last night. The attack is believed to have happened at around 1AM.
The victim was found by Inner City Helping homeless, who were doing their nightly checks of rough sleepers on both sides of the Liffey.
She was brought to Pearse Street Garda Station where Former Lord Mayor Christy Burke said she was in a very distressed state "she was traumatises and told me she was raped in Stephen's Green by another guy."
"Her partner was 300 feet away from her, and he felt terrible he couldn't rescue her", he added.
This alleged assault puts the spotlight on the vulnerability of homeless people on the streets. Chair of Dublin City council’s housing committee Daithi Doolan said no rough sleeper deserves to be attacked "this is a criminal issue. Everybody has a right to live and work in this city and not be attacked".
It comes as a brainstorming session is taking place at the Mansion House to put more ideas on the table for the Government’s Housing action plan. Minister Simon Coveney says he hopes to have the details made public soon "I expect the new housing strategy will be launched in about two weeks time".
Councillor Christy Burke has told 98FM's Dublin Talks how he assisted last night's alleged rape victim.
