Folks,
98FM’s weekly sports show “Now That’s What I Call Sport” airs every Sunday morning from 9-10am.
Presented by myself Johnny Lyons, this week’s show broadcast on Sunday March 15th features the following guests :
- Shane Byrne
When are they upping the ante with this technology lark?
I mean, you know, you wouldn’t think there’d be a problem with ringing Keith Wood on a flight to Rome, would you ?
Jesus you can just about do pretty much everything else on airliners these days.
In case you’re wonderin’ I ain’t advocating the use of phones on planes. In fact, if it’s ever permitted, that’s when Johnny looks for an alternative mode of transport.
Anyway, as you might have gathered, Woody won’t be joining us on the show - he’s on his way to Rome for the slugfest between Italy and France.
So we’ve replaced the bald one with the hirsute one!
Lions, Ireland and Leinster hooker Shane joins us to look back on the crucial Six Nations match between Ireland and Wales in Cardiff on Saturday.
The Irish are on course for the Grand Slam but we know Warren Gatland – the Wales manager – likes to put one over his former employees.
And for the sake of the continuance of love and peace in The Malt House South Block, I sincerely hope the Welsh flyer Alex Cuthbert doesn’t score the winning try!!
- Mick Cooke
I’m delighted to welcome Mick to the show.
Cookey makes his debut appearance after a lifetime doin’ service in the League of Ireland.
His bona fides are he played as a striker with Shamrock Rovers and St Patricks Athletic in the 70s/80s and then went onto manage the Irish womens soccer team for eight years.
Cooke moved onto the mens’ stage with Monaghan Utd, Drogheda Utd and, most recently, Athlone Town.
Cookey’s comin’ in to see how the new LOI season is shaping up after two series of matches.
And – to be fair to him – Cookey’s cracked it when it comes to how to prepare for the new season.
Spend hours poring over last year’s stats and this campaign’s new squads?
Go out in all four seasons’ weather checking out the pre season games?
Liaise with his fellow managers sussin’ out their plans ?
Not a bit of it mate – Cookey scarpered off to the Algarve for a week of r’r in 20+ temperatures and arrives in the Malt House on Sunday with a freshly topped up tan !
Luv it !
- Jonathan Garth
It’s like a blue moon – it don’t happen often but when it does occur tis a rare thing of beauty !
Ireland play Pakistan in a must win match at the Cricket World Cup in Adelaide and the craic is that the critical juncture of the game is scheduled to take place bang in the middle of our little ole show!
And so the tea and crumpets (it’s actually Jack Daniel’s and space cakes) will be laid out for Jonathan who’ll be fightin with Cookey for room in front of the custom built IMAX television screens in the Sports Dept.
Abacus in one hand and calculator in the other, former Irish international Jonathan will be ready to rock and roll when the call comes to enter the hallowed portals that is the On Air 1 studio.
If Ireland look like they’re gonna win, I’ve promised Jonathan and Cookey I’ll bring ‘em over to Farmer Browns after the show for a scrumptious breakfast !
- Dara O’Cinneide
Always beware when a Kerry legend comes sniffin’ around the show !
Seriously, delighted to have Dara back on the show.
The three time All Ireland winner has a new show “GAA USA” starting on TG4 next Wednesday night from 9.30pm.
It’s a four part weekly series charting the history of our national games in the States.
It covers all aspects of the Stateside experience from the early days in the nineteenth century when hurling rivalled baseball, through the 30’s when Gaelic Games missed a beat by not becoming a fully fledgled College sport, up to the 50’s when many counties including Dublin travelled over there and to the Golden Era which fizzled out towards the end of the 90’s when the difficulties in gettin’ Green Cards decimated the sport.
We also get Dara’s expert opinion on how the Dubs are doin’ at the moment.
And – from one cute hoor to another – we try to winkle out of him when Kerry’s best player Colm “Gooch” Cooper is returning after more than a year out through injury.
Competition :
Tix for Leinster against Glasgow at the RDS on Friday March 27th.
Thanks,
Johnny.
