The 3rd record from Marina and The Diamonds, Froot, is released tomorrow, Friday 13th. Don't be superstitious, now. Marina was in Dublin recently and I caught up with the woman herself, Marina Diamandis where we talked about her new album, obviously, but we may have gotten distracted on the way.
Listen here:
The album itself is an absolute delight. Marina, yeah we're on first name terms, has put her songwriting skills on display as well she should. There are some really clever and beautifully crafted lyrics, with every song being written by the woman herself. Take that Beyoncé.
On 'Can't Pin Me Down', Marina sings, "You can paint me any colour/ And I can be your clown/ But you ain’t got my number/ No you can’t pin me down" and I think that is something of a calling card for the Welsh singer. For years women in music have been put into certain musical boxes and there they are meant to stay. To this, Marina says no and well she should. Diamandis can be a chanteuse, indie rocker or an electro popper. No boxes for her.
There are moments of true personal confession and contemplation on the record but they are also experiences that are shared, ones that everyone can relate to. On 'Blue' she sings of a relationship, after the fact, and the regrets that come with it, even though you know it's better that it's over. We've all been there, right? (Insert expletive here as you think about that ex) With 'Better Than That' she's talking to a friend who is being taken for a fool by a girl. Chances are you've wanted to shake a friend over a doomed and crappy relationship too.
There are also songs that will have the most avid dance floor shruggers moving their hips and the ones that you will be singing at 3 in the morning on the way back to your tent at Electric Picnic.
Oh, also, Marina is a compete RIDE and sound out.
