Folks,
98FM’s weekly sports show “Now That’s What I Call Sport” airs every Sunday morning from 9-10am.
Presented by myself Johnny Lyons, this week’s show broadcast on Sunday January 18th features the following guests :
- Mossy Quinn –
They say it takes one to know one.
And so it is with All Ireland winners.
Who better to bring on the show to pay tribute to Bryan Cullen than another winner of Sam in Mossy?
Cullen recently retired after a glittering career of which the highlight was his skippering of the Dubs to All Ireland success in 2011.
With that ending a sixteen year drought in the capital I guess after that the halo could only slip a little for the skipper.
Although winning another All Ireland two years later, Cullen was really only a bit part player in the success.
And at the ripe old age of 30 he announced his retirement from playin’ for the Dubs last week.
Mossy was part of that ’11 team himself and will let us in on a few nuggets from sharing a dressingroom with Cullen.
And – having been known to share an ice bath with Cullen – we’ll find out the ice cold truth about those life shortening experiences!
We also won’t miss the opportunity to ask Mossy how his beloved St Vincents will get on against Corofin in the All Ireland semi finals next month.
- John Fogarty –
There’s a must win European Champions Cup tie for Leinster against Castres at the RDS on Saturday.
The Blues have some of their heavyweights back for this one including their skipper Jamie Heaslip and so it feels appropriate to get a heavyweight from yesteryear – former Irish international frontrower John – to look back on what – fingers crossed – will be a famous victory.
- Fergus Ryan –
2015 is gonna be a massive year for the Irish in UFC.
The Fightin’ Irish are gonna come to the fore!
All the action kicks off in Boston on Sunday night with UFC 59.
The Dublin fighter that’s on everyone’s lips at the moment is Conor McGregor and he could be the richest sportsman in the country by year’s end.
McGregor fights the Russian born 36 year old German Denis Siver in what is essentially an eliminator for the right to take on the World number one.
There’s no doubt McGregor is the UFC flavour of the moment.
Lorenzo Fertitta the UFC co owner is already on record eulogising McGregor sayin’ he’s the best thing since sliced bread.
In an interesting sponsorship arrangement, UFC have penned a deal with Reebok which covers just two of their 9 champions - and McGregor!
While we know Croke Park has been booked in for a non sports event in May – could it be a McGregor headline fight ?
One thing for sure – lock up your daughters when these guys are around !
Here’s this quote from McGregor – “ facin’ me is intimidating enough – I don’t have to do anything to intimidate these people – they’re already intimidated” !
Fergus is one of the chief bloggers on the sport and he previews the event in Boston which also features fellow Irishmen Cathal Pendred, Paddy Holohan and Norman Parke.
We also talk to another Dubliner Paul Redmond ahead of his bout in Stockholm next Saturday the 24th.
Once again there’s no messin’ with Redser – “ I go for 10k road runs and then come down here to get punched around by the lads” and “if you leave your arm out I’ll jump on it at 100 mph”.
Jaysus – sounds like a Johnny night out in Bruxelles all those years ago !
- Willie Mullins –
We hear from one of our top trainers ahead of the 100 grand Boylesports Hurdle at Leopardstown on Sunday.
Competitions:
- Special edition Dubs shirts to give way with thanks to AIG
- Halpenny Golf vouchers worth 100 euro to win
Thanks,
Johnny.
