Folks,

98FM’s weekly sports show “Now That’s What I Call Sport” airs every Sunday morning from 9-10am.

Presented by myself Johnny Lyons, this week’s show broadcast on November 9th  features the following guests :

  1. Matthew Macklin -  Mack the Knife slices through the opposition on Now Sport !

It’s been a while since Matthew‘s been on the show and it’ always great to have a true champion as our very special guest.

Yep Matthew’s joinin’ us live from Manchester where he’s in training ahead of his World title eliminator against the Argentinian Jorge Sebastian Heiland next Saturday at the 3Arena.

It’s a star studded bill with our Olympics silver medallist John Joe Nevin and the bout between the Pride of Parnell Street Anthony Fitzgerald and Spike O‘Sullivan – these two do not like each other!

Matthew ain’t no MacHeath – he puts his money where his mouth is so to speak!

Armed with a flurry of counter attacking punches, this Mack the Knife don’t hide anythin’ when he’s comin’ atcha!

When Matthew puts the Argentinian to the knife, he’s on course for a showdown with the vicious Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto !

And, apart from all his boxing accolades, Mack the Knife’s claim to fame is he’s the only inter county hurler with a Euro medal !

Despite being born in Birmingham, Mack’s as Irish as they come and spent many a summer a courtin’ in the wilds of Tipp – as well as whackin’ the oul sliothar between the posts !

Mack the Knife certainly doesn’t pull any punches !

  1. Reggie Corrigan -  Former frontrower with Ireland and Leinster, Reggie looks back on the first of Ireland’s November internationals against South Africa at the Aviva Stadium.

Hopefully the mighty Boks will have come a cropper !

  1. Ian Plenderleith – Sure we couldn’t have a show without a bit of rock n roll in it!

Ian’s the author of a book analysing the short lived but hectic NASL the North American Soccer League which exploded like a tornado through the stiff upper lip footballing landscape of the 70’s/80’s !

And rock n roll it was too – with Yes superstar Rick Wakeman and the Rolling Stones’ tour manager owning clubs, Cruyff, Pele and Beckenbauer gracing the League with their considerable presence and long haired dudes Rodney Marsh and Frank Worthington prancin’ around the place  - it really was sex, drugs and rock n roll!

There was also an Emerald Isle connection -  John Giles played with Philadelphia Fury in ’78 and brought fellow Dubliners Pierce O’Leary, Pat Byrne, Fran O’Brien and Eddie Byrne over to sample the Philly sound!

Giles then went on to manage Vancouver Whitecaps who sent some of their players on loan to UCD in the League of Ireland including Dave Norman who played for Canada in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

We forget how prescient the Yanks were – decades before they became de rigueur on this side of the world, we had all seater stadia, more points for a win, changes to the offside rule.

Oh and we also had all the hoopla and razzmatazz – and cheerleaders !

Ian’s doin’ his own bit of rock n roll and staying up late in Washington to take the call 4am his time !

Competitions :

-          Tixs for the Matthew Macklin fight at the 3Arena

-          Arsenal shirts with thanks to LifeStyle Sports

Thanks,

Johnny.
