Leeds and Republic of Ireland legend John Giles cannot understand why Chelsea have decided to sack Graham Potter and appoint Frank Lampard as interim manager for the remainder of the season.
Chelsea sacked Graham Potter on Sunday, after a losing 2-0 to Aston Villa; the latest in a long line of poor results this season.
On Thursday morning, Lampard was appointed interim manager to take charge of the club for the remainder of the season, or until a permanent manager is found.
Lampard has been out of a job since he was dismissed by Everton in January. The 44-year-old previously managed Chelsea from July 2019 until he was sacked in January 2021.
His first game will be away to Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday before a Champions League quarter-final first leg against Real Madrid on Wednesday.
Lampard to Chelsea is 'total rubbish'
Speaking on The Football Show, Giles expressed his frustration with Chelsea's decision to get rid of Potter.
"It's total rubbish," Giles said. "Frank Lampard is coming until the end of the season, I can't see him performing miracles until the end of the season to get the job again.
"Potter is only there this season. A lot of the signings he hasn't been responsible for, the owners are responsible for them. Why not let Potter stay on until the end of the season?
"See if he can get a grip of the situation. There's so many players that they've bought it's difficult to do so. He's not responsible for that."
Chelsea have been at the mercy of American owner Todd Boehly since he took over from Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
"It's madhouse, Chelsea, at the moment," Giles said. "I can't see any sense in getting Frank Lampard in when you've just had a manager in. Give him a little bit of time, because he's not had time to put his stamp on it."
