“He's Been On An Incredible Journey" - Stephen Kenny's Tribute To Mark Farren

One of the League of Ireland's best ever strikers, Mark Farren, passed away this week, aged just 33, following an eight year battle with a brain tumor.

He was Derry’s all time leading goal-scorer, with 114 goals in 209 appearances.

He was buried on Friday and was laid to rest in the same grave as his triplet daughters, who died shortly after their birth in 2014.

98FM’s Jamie Moore spoke to Mark’s former manager Stephen Kenny on Sunday morning’s Now That’s What I Call Sport.

Stephen says he was “privileged” to know Mark and told Jamie about the 2008 season, when Farren knocked his my door to tell him he had a brain tumor and was in trouble.

“It’s been an incredible journey that he’s been on, it’s hard to believe how difficult it was for him having been dealt the cards he was, he showed tremendous courage.”

“He was a superb finisher and had lightening pace and an instinct for scoring goals.”

Stephen has kept in touch with Mark and his wife Terri since he left Derry. They joined Stephen and his wife for winner just last year and were “very positive about his future.”

The tumor reappeared, became more aggressive and his condition deteriorated quickly, despite attempts with life saving treatment in Mexico, he died this week.

Stephen saw Mark last week and said “his time had come and he was ready to go.”
