Former Cork city striker Sean Maguire wants to be Preston’s no.1 striker following his move to the championship.
He chatted with 98FM’s Jamie Moore about his time at Cork city, his big move to Preston and his future international aspirations.
Cork city were knocked out of the UEFA Europa league second qualifying round by AEK Larnaca earlier in the week.
“I felt we didn’t play to the best of our ability again and it’s frustrating my last game for the club I was hoping to go out with a bang but it wasn’t meant to be.”
Maguire touched on his massive rise in form over the past season which he puts down to added confidence and incredible work with the back room staff at Cork city.
“I felt that going into every game I was going to score.”
“All the boys we all look fit; we score a lot of our goals in the last 20 – 25 minutes. I feel a lot stronger and it’s a credit to the club”
This is Maguire’s second stint in England, he talked about moving over to West Ham at a young age and why it didn’t work out.
“When I went over to West Ham I took a lot for granted. I have a few regrets obviously I could’ve done a few things differently. I was an 18 year old, I was very immature. I didn’t know what was right and what was wrong”.
Sean highlighted his determination to not make the same mistake and stake his claims in the team from the get go.
“I’ll be looking to get over there and show the new gaffer that I’m the number 1 striker”.
Maguire is relishing the chance to perform at a higher level in the championship and confidence is definitely not lacking in the striker.
“I feel like I can bring a lot of goals, I feel like I can step up at this level and go show to everyone that I can score goals at championship level.”
The former Cork city man has said a major factor in the move is the large amount of Irish players in the Preston squad that will make it easier for him to settle in.
“It’s gonna be a lot easier to settle when there’s six Irish lads right beside you”.
He gave his insight into his possible future involvement in the senior international set up for Ireland as he has represented under age levels all the way up, he says he is not worrying too much about it.
“I’m hoping one day I will throw on that jersey and represent my country; my main goal now is to concentrate on club level and getting into the Preston team.”
