This morning on Dublin Talks we asked if people should be entitled to turn down a social housing offer if they don't like the area or the house. A report released over the weekend said that 1/5 people have turned down offers in the past because they don't like the area or the house, they aren't happy about the local schools or it's not close enough to their friends and family.
We heard from a girl who believes that they should have every right to turn down an offer and wait for something that suits them better, she said "they have to live there".
We then heard from a man who told us "spongers should get no choice, you take what you're given". This annoyed a woman who rang in to tell us that she turned down a house in Dun Laoghaire because she believes "the area has so many drug addicts". She told us it was the best decision she ever made and now she has the home of her dreams. Many of our listeners were enraged by her comments and the fact that she turned down a house because she wanted to wait for something better to come along...
