Good things come to those who wait.
That’s certainly the case for Daryl Horgan.
The ex Dundalk winger made his first Championship start for Preston North End on Saturday.
PNE beat league leaders Brighton 2-0.
The 24 year old Galway native created the second goal for Callum Robinson eight minutes after half-time with an excellent pass, before being subbed off to a standing ovation in injury time.
#DarylHorgan went viral on Twitter, and even though Ireland assistant boss Roy Keane is not on Twitter, he’s sure to have taken note from his seat in the Deepdale stand.
98FM’s Now That’s What I Call Sport spoke exclusively to Horgan on Sunday morning.
He told Jamie Moore that it was a surprise to find out he was playing just 90 minutes before kick-off, despite coming on for ten minutes against Arsenal in the FA Cup last weekend.
“It was brilliant. I wasn’t expecting to be anywhere near the team so early but to get the opportunity was brilliant and to put the table toppers to the sword was unreal, we thoroughly deserved the three points.”
“I just found out (that that he was playing) in the team meeting about an hour and a half before kick-off, so it didn’t give me too much time to worry about it.”
“I was excited and looking forward to it, I didn’t make the move over here to panic about playing games.”
The Irish assistant manager Roy Keane was at the match, Horgan says his focus is not on a second call-up to the Ireland senior squad just yet.
He was in the squad for last year’s World Cup qualifier against Austria.
Horgan is looking forward to winning the trip to “one of the biggest stadiums in England” to take on Aston Villa at Villa Park next Saturday but is unsure if he’ll keep his place in the team.
