Ireland have sensationally beaten New Zealand in their second group game at the Womens Rugby World Cup just outside Paris.

The Irish won by 17 points to 14 against the four time world champions in their first ever meeting.

The crucial score came just after the hour mark when a brilliant run from full back Niamh Briggs ended up with left winger Alison Miller touching down in the corner.

That gave Ireland the lead for the first time 14-11 ahead.

The Black Ferns levelled it up before the excellent Briggs won it with the winning penalty.

Ireland opened up brilliantly but couldn't break through resolute Kiwi defence.

New Zealand then raced into an 8-0 lead against the run of play before number 8 Heather O'Brien touched down under the posts and Briggs converted.

So it's the whipping girls Kazakhstan next for Ireland on Saturday in the final group game.
