Folks,
98FM's weekly sports show "Now That's What I Call Sport" airs every Sunday morning from 9-10am.
Presented by myself Johnny Lyons, this week's show broadcast on Sunday May 24th features the following guests :
- Ray Cosgrove -
"Good craic and a handsome divil to boot!"
That's how our very own Stephen Doyle describes the former Dublin forward.
And to be fair to be fair I couldn't have put it better meself!
Apart from being blessed with rampant good looks, Cossy was a damn good footballer.
He should have won an All Ireland with the Dubs but had to be content with four Leinster titles though he did gain some consolation at national level by winning All Ireland Club Championship gold with Kilmacud Crokes.
And Cossy hasn't left the inter county scene - he's now helping out his former Dublin teammate Jonny Magee down in Wicklow.
Anyways it's that time of the season and Cossy joins us to look ahead to the new Championship campaign with the Dubs taking on Longford in the Leinster Championship opener on Sunday week at Croker.
And there are lots of talking points with both pluses and minuses.
Bainisteoir Jim Gavin must feel he has two new players at his disposal with the returns from injury of Alan Brogan and Ciaran Kilkenny - they're the silver linings but there are dark clouds with the enforced absence for the whole Championship of Eoghan "The Bull" O'Gara with the dreaded cruciate ligament injury.
The china shop can rest easy!
And Ray'll talk about the difficulties of Dublin playing in a provincial Championship where there's no meaningful opposition!
- Trevor Hogan -
Talkin' bout good lookin' fellas, this guy certainly fits the bill!
The proverbial 6 foot six and full of muscle, Trev certainly turns heads wherever he goes !
Most definitely he's filed away in the Hunk folder !
Unfortunately for you grasping girls and boys, he's been grabbed by a former 98FMer Claire Brock now of UTV Ireland who skipped down the aisle with him!
Trevor's a former Irish international who also played with both Leinster and Munster and will examine the probable reason why Matt O'Connor was relieved of his coaching duties by Leinster.
There are many reasons out there in the ether - failure to qualify for the Pro12 play offs for the first time ever, a spat between the Aussie and Irish head coach Joe Schmidt and the IRFU over their Player Welfare Scheme and increasing fan dissatisfaction with the style of play all didn't portray Leinster and it's employees in the best of light this season.
All of this will be of no bother to Trev - he's spent time disrupting the Gaza blockade so a little bit of rugby kerfuffle is a piece of cake for him !
- Alan Browne -
I've always wondered about the play offs system cross channel.
In the Championship, League One and League Two divisions if you fail to finish in the automatic qualifying positions and you win a semi final, you're through to a prestigious final played in front of 70,000 plus at the home of English football Wembley!
Now you know the price of failure in football - a day trip to London to play in one of the most iconic football stadia in the world! And it's packed!
And so Alan plays for Preston North End in the League One play off final against Swindon Town on Sunday evening.
Browner's a former Irish Under 19s captain who's also just made his debut for the Under 21s and has his heart set on a place in Martin O'Neill's full Republic of Ireland squad soon !
- Stephen Duffy
We go Skydiving with Stevo!
There's a hattrick of Irishmen taking part in the first ever Wingsuit Performance Skydiving World Cup which is held in Netheravon near Stonehenge starting on Monday.
Now what do we know about the sport of skydiving - not much before this week !
There are five disciplines including Wingsuiting and the wonderfully named Canopy Piloting amongst 'em.
It's not about aesthetics but it's not all about speed either - time and distance coming into the equation as well.
In terms of what exactly Wingsuiting is, Stephen describes it as "skydiving in a straitjacket"!
Now there's no skydiving in Dublin though there's a very good reason for that - too many planes!
Competition :
Tix to see the Dubs double header at Croker on Sunday week.
Thanks,
Johnny.
