Folks,
98FM’s sports show “Now That’s What I Call Sport” airs every Sunday morning from 9-10am.
Presented by myself Johnny Lyons, this week’s show broadcast on Sunday January 25th features the following guests :
- Norman Whiteside –
Aw it’s a real thrill to have the mighty man that’s Norman making his debut on the show.
Big Norm is one of the legends of the game and just lurves comin’ to Dublin – mostly for the Guinness these days !
For those of you who don’t know Norman is a Manchester United legend – he holds a number of records to this day including the youngest ever player to score a senior goal for Utd when he netted in only his second appearance against Stoke City just eight days after turning 17.
But – as a club player – he’ll best be remembered for that fabulous extra time goal which won the 1985 FA Cup final against Everton on the day that Kevin Moran became the first player ever to be sent off in an FA Cup final.
However, as records go, they don’t come much better than the one he holds at international level.
At the age of 17 years one month and ten days and with just two competitive games with Man U under his belt, Norman became the youngest player ever to appear at the World Cup when he started for Northern Ireland against Yugoslavia during the 1982 finals in Spain.
Norman’s career was cut short by injury and though he showed his versatility by switching from winger/centre forward to defensive midfielder, he was done and dusted at the age of 26.
Big Norm talks about where Man U are in the grand scheme of things under their new manager Louis van Gaal and tells why his old buddy and big time 98 listener Paul McGrath will be annoyed with him!
- Shane Byrne –
Who’d wanna be a clairvoyant ?
Well who knows what’s gonna happen in the future but – fingers crossed – ex Lions, Ireland and Leinster hooker Shane will be looking back on a tremendous European Champions Cup win for Leinster against Wasps in their final group game in Coventry on Saturday which will propel em into a home quarter final.
Anyone off to the bookies ?
- Aoife Lane –
Tis a sign of the times and an encouraging sign that I’ve Aoife on the line.
Aoife’s the Chairperson of the newly founded Womens Gaelic Players Association.
Who’s Aoife I hear you say?
She’s from Galway and lives in Waterford where she lectures in the local WIT.
With a background in camogie she got the idea of forming a womens’ welfare organisation when talking with the head of the GPA Donal Og Cusack a year ago.
At the moment the association is in it’s infancy.
There are only 40 members and the only funding they get is from the GPA itself.
What’s crucial for the WGPA is they get more members and gain recognition from the Camogie and Ladies Football Associations as that’s the secret to obtaining funding.
But Aoife doesn’t hang around and she’s already made movement on one front – there’s a national helpline set up for females who’ve got mental health issues.
And we have an exclusive preview of the prestigious BHP Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown this Sunday with Tony McCoy, Willie Mullins, Ruby Walsh and Jessica Harrington.
Competition:
1x 100 euro voucher for Halpenny’s Golf.
Thanks,
Johnny.
