Folks,
98FM’s weekly sports show “Now That’s What I Call Sport” airs every Sunday morning from 9-10am.
Presented by myself Johnny Lyons, this week’ s show broadcast on Sunday November 23rd features the following guests :
- Anthony Daly –
You just have to luv Dalo !
His passion and enthusiasm for the game of the hurling is infectious and shines through on every level.
If there ever was a man with the Midas touch it was Dalo – as a player anyway !
He was the skipper who brought Liam McCarthy back to Clare after a centuryish long drought !
But he found a different kettle of fish when he came to Dublin as bainisteoir !
As he says himself – everyone down the country thinks it’s a bed of roses when you get a gig in Dublin but as Dalo found out – that ain’t always the case !
While Daly acknowledges the help he did get and it was considerable, there were a number of basics that weren’t met.
The Bannerman was trying to make a hurling culture permanent but it wasn’t standing up for itself or wasn’t being allowed to get up off the floor so to speak.
The problem with Dublin hurling is the humongously large elephant in the room – the auld football !
Football is the sexy part – they win All Irelands’ and they’re household names all over the Emerald Isle.
So it is a bit of a Catch 22 situation – in order for the hurlers to win Liam they need the perks that the footballers get but they’re winnin’ Sams and so the process goes on etc, etc.
Facilities, the quality of pitch available and the fact that kids have to decide at the age of 16 whether they wanna play football or hurling are all bugbears but there is light at the end of the tunnel – the Dubs Under 16’s have just won their National Cup but how many of em will still be hurling in a couple of years time ?
In the first of a wide ranging two part interview, Anthony gives his views and possible solutions to the above problems.
Savage it was – savage !
2. Mils Muliaina
Delighted to have one of THE legends of the rugby world joining us live on the show.
Mils is a Kiwi great – he’s one of the best full backs that ever flung a ball around for pay.
And a classy guy into the bargain – he retired on his 100th cap having won a World Cup winners’ medal!
He’s now with Connacht where he made his debut against Zebre on Friday night.
We’ll shoot the breeze with Mils about his elbow injury, how he’s gettin’ on with his fellow Kiwis Tom McCartney and Bundee Aki, the challenge facing Connacht against Bayonne in the – er – Challenge Cup, his Sevens success in the Commonwealth Games and his YouTube intro !
3. Keith Wood -
A legend in his own right the Lion that is Woody looks back on how Ireland did against the Aussies in the last of the Autumn Tests at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday.
C’mon the Boys in Green !
