UCD is to increase the price of on-campus accommodation for students.
Rents will rise by 4 per cent each year, over the next three years.
It will see the cost of student accommodation increase to between €8,000 and €9,900 a year.
The south Dublin university says it's needed to fund the maintenance of existing housing and to allow for 3,000 new student beds to be built.
Joanna Siewierska is President of UCD's Student Union. She says there was no consultation;
"We've already got the most expensive on-campus student accommodation in the country. A lot of our first year students rely on the on-campus accommodation, especially if they're coming from outside of Dublin."
She says the move will put an additional strain on their families.
