Netflix's new true crime documentary airs today. Directed by Jean-Xavier de Lestrade, The Staircase originally aired in 2004 in France. However, it has now been revived by Netflix to include 13 episodes - three of which feature new footage and information.
The Staircase tells the story of Kathleen Peterson, who was found dead at the bottom of a staircase in December 2001. Her husband, crime novelist Michael Peterson contacted police after discovering her body - claiming she fell while he was in their back garden.
Michael was convicted of the murder in 2003. In 2011, he was granted a new trial. In February 2017, he made a plea bargain and his charge was reduced to manslaughter. He was then sentenced to time already served and freed.
The Guardian has hailed the series "an astonishing piece of work", while other critics say The Staircase will be hit with fans of Making A Murderer, The Keepers and the Amanda Knox documentary.
The Staircase is now streaming on Netflix. Weekend plans sorted!
