Trinity College is considering replacing the grass area outside the front of the Dublin university with a wildflower meadow.
TCD says its already converted parts of the campus to wildflower havens.
It says the move would support biodiversity, provide a much-needed habitat for native insects and food for pollinators in the city centre.
"Our wildflower meadow will flower in spring and summer and be left untouched over the winter months when pollinator insects (e.g. butterflies, hoverflies, bees) hibernate." according to a post online.
The university says it may look less tidy but it will be an important reminder of what wild nature looks like.
The current frequency of grass cutting, ground preparation and pesticide control influence negatively on how insects live, feed and nest in the soil, according to TCD.
A public vote on converting the Front Gate lawns has opened online.
