Accompanied by body guards, the Wonka actor spontaneously showed up at the gathering in the middle of Washington Square Park, attracting a cacophony of screaming fans.
Variety reported that Chalamet snuck his way through the crowd hiding behind a mask and baseball hat, before creeping up to two lookalikes who had been posing for photos, sparking shrieks across the park.
The actor posed for pictures with his doppelgängers but didn’t stay for long as his appearance gathered more and more attention.
The lookalike competition was organised by YouTuber Anthony Po, offering a prize of $50 for the winner.

What started out as a silly idea on the internet became a viral sensation, and the event itself ended up being shut down by police as the crowd size was unprecedented.
In a statement to the BBC, the New York Police Department said it responded to "an unscheduled demonstration at Washington Square Park" on Sunday.
It added that people were taken into custody and later released with a summons.
