Over a quarter of a million people are waiting for health scans in hospitals.
59 thousand have been on the lists for over a year according to data from the National Treatment Purchase Fund.
38,000 people have been on the list for over 18 months.
The stats relate to people waiting for CTs, MRIs and ultrasounds.
The HSE says funds have been provided to address the waiting lists this year.
Sinn Féin's health spokesperson, David Cullinane, says the total figure is very concerning.
''It's incredible to have the amount of people waiting for a scan that we do. We have tens of thousands of people waiting for scans on the public system. that will obviously have an impact on health professionals to provide safe level of care to people. Scans are really important. Some are routine but they show up difficulties and challenges that can lad to a diagnosis.''
