A Dublin taxi driver has been remanded in custody after being convicted of raping two young female passengers on separate dates in June and August of 2022.
Raymond Shorten, of Melrose Crescent, Clondalkin, couldn’t be named while the trial was live, but can be identified now that he has been found guilty.
The first survivor was just 19 years old when Raymond Shorten raped her in the back of his taxi while bringing her home from a night out in Dublin city in June 2022.
The second woman was aged 20 when he did the same to her just two months later.
DNA linked Shorten to the women but he claimed the sexual interactions between them was consensual and even suggested they were the ones who came on to him.
The first woman described slipping in and out of consciousness as he raped her after she’d been out socialising with colleagues.
After raping the second woman in August 2022, the jury heard Shorten dropped her home and charged her €70 for the fare.
The jury didn’t take long to return their guilty verdicts having deliberated for just over an hour.
His sentence hearing will take place next month.
