Talking lamp-posts have been installed in popular dog-walking areas in parts of South Dublin.
They play pre-recorded messages, encouraging people to clean up after their dog and always carry waste bags.
The motion sensor devices are being trialed in areas including Ballyogan, Marlay Park, Killiney Hill, Glenageary and Seapoint.
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council says the talking lamp-posts could help cut dog fouling by more than 80%.
Councillor Shay Brennan said the trial "is about educating the small minority of dog owners who don’t pick up after their pets".
He said he wants "to shift attitudes so that it becomes socially unacceptable to not clean-up after your dog".
The scheme asks dog owners to make the following pledge:
- clean up after their dog
- carry extra dog waste bags
- be happy to be approached to 'lend' a dog waste bag to those without
- be a friendly reminder to other dog walkers to clean up after their pet
