Merrion Strand will be the first beach in the country to shut to swimmers under water quality law.

It's after a new bathing water report from the Environmental Protection Agency found it to be of poor standard for the fifth year in a row.

The ban will take effect from June 1st, with signage set to be put up warning people to keep out of the water.

In total 147 water bodies were assessed in the report, with 140 meeting the minimum required standard.

As in 2018, the water quality at five beaches was classified as ‘poor’. They include Dublin's Merrion Strand and Portrane (the Brook) Beach.

Commenting on the report, EPA Director Dr Micheál Lehane said;

"Local authorities must remain vigilant to ensure public health is protected and continue to identify and fix sources of water pollution which impact on our beaches. "

He went on to say;

"The declassification of Merrion Strand after five years at poor status is disappointing and action must be taken to ensure that no other bathing water is declassified in future."

Three bathing waters, all in Dublin, were classified for the first time. They were;

  • The Forty Foot Bathing Place (classified as ‘excellent’)
  • White Rock Beach (classified as ‘excellent’)
  • Sandycove Beach (classified as ‘good’)
