Tomorrow's AFL match between Essendon and Melbourne has been postponed after Conor McKenna tested positive for COVID-19.

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan has confirmed that the Tyrone man was the only Essendon player to register a positive test yesterday.

"I'm clearly disappointed. I'm disappointed for Conor and I'm disappointed for Essendon and their playing cohort," he told reporters this morning.

"But I think in the end this was always a possibility, whether it was likely or not. I'm pleased we had a whole series of procedures put in place quite quickly. We've got an ability to rejig our fixture and work through this, so I feel we are well prepared.

"Clearly, we're disappointed for the player, the team and the competition but we understand this is a possibility and we will work through that."

Essendon's players and coaching staff have now been instructed to isolate.

"The league had conducted more than 13,000 tests as part of their Covid-19 protocols. McKenna's was the first positive result," the League's chief added.

"The club's training facility will be shut down and thoroughly cleaned. This is a reminder that we must be on our toes at all times, we are not all through this crisis."
