Australia's Bernard Tomic has been fined his full Wimbledon prize money of 45-thousand pounds after officials said he wasn't playing to the "required professional standard".

His 58-minute first-round defeat to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was the shortest men's match at the tournament in 15 years.

Fans called his performance "appalling" and "embarrassing".

Asked afterward if he thought he might be fined, Tomic said: "What for?"

“I think I played as best as I could. It’s just I played terribly...Next question please.”

"I played well last week. This week, tough first round. I knew if I didn't feel good, I'd lose this match quickly.

"We played so fast. It's not like we're going to have a lot of rallies out there," added Tomic when defending the loss.

“It is the opinion of the referee that the performance of Bernard Tomic in his first round match against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga did not meet the required professional standards", said the All-England club in a statement.

“Therefore he has been fined the maximum amount of £45,000 which will be deducted from prize money.”

Tomic was fined £15,000 for a straight sets defeat by Mischa Zverev in 2017, admitting after the match that he faked an injury was "bored" of Wimbledon.

America’s Anna Tatishvili was also stripped of her first round prize money at the French Open at Roland Garros for “not playing at a professional standard” earlier this year.
