Top golfer Tiger Woods was 'not drunk' and his car crash in California on Tuesday is being treated as an accident.
Woods suffered multiple fractures to his right leg and damage to his ankle in a single-car collision in Los Angeles, requiring intensive surgery in hospital.
Any type of charges appear to have been ruled out, although authorities are still investigating the incident.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said in a live-streamed social media event that the incident was an accident and there was no evidence of Woods being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
“This is purely an accident," said Villaneuva.
“There’ll be a cause of it, and there’ll be a vehicle code attached to the cause - if it’s inattentive driving or whatever the case may be. But that’s an infraction. An accident is not a crime.”
The deputy who was first to encounter Woods on the scene, Carlos Gonzalez, has said he has 'all the information he needs' and that there 'was no impairment whatsoever' when it came to Woods' condition at the scene.
In 2017, Woods pleaded guilty to a charge of reckless driving after he was arrested for a DUI in Florida, brought on by a reaction to painkillers.
The 15-time major champion will be out of the game for the foreseeable future after the serious incident, which generated an outpouring of support for the 45-year-old, with Rory McIlroy, Jack Nicklaus and Barack Obama wishing Woods a speedy recovery.
