The Waterford hurling manager Derek McGrath has stepped down this evening following a county board meeting.
The news was confirmed after a committee board meeting for Waterford tonight.
McGrath released a statement which read: "Five thoroughly enjoyable years. It’s been a huge honour to learn from everybody and backroom staff. I’d like to thank my selectors who have been loyal and also the county board. The memories shared will stay with me forever. This team will be forever ingrained in my heart."
Joe Molloy spoke to Waterford native Oisin Langan, who was reporting on Waterford's game at the weekend for us, about the breaking news.
"I actually thought he might give it another go. I’ve been proven wrong. I’m sad he’s stepped down. There’s no reason he can’t take a couple of years off and come back to it in the future. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong," he said.
"I’m incredibly grateful to Derek. He got a lot of criticism. I think he’s done a wonderful job and set up a wonderful template for whoever comes in. Sean Power is going to jump out maybe Eoin Murphy, he has a lot of respect from the players, there’s about three candidates but there’s no front and certain ‘there’s our guy’ candidate. There are options out there."
McGrath won a National League title with Waterford in 2015, and brought them to Munster finals in both 2015 and 2016.
