The reasons for Danny Sutcliffe's departure from the Dublin hurling panel have been revealed. The St Judes man wants to focus on his studies - that's according to former team mate Cian O'Callaghan.
Sutcliffe is undertaking a Masters in Finance at DCU. O'Callaghan says that's his primary focus next year. O’Callaghan told the Irish Independent: “As far as I'm aware he wants to concentrate on his Masters,” O'Callaghan said.
“Danny's been in there for a few years now committing completely to hurling so obviously if he wants to take the year out then that's up to him.”
“It's up to the younger lads and the lads that have been called in to stand up more now, there's more leadership required now than before. So it's an opportunity for those lads to come in and stake a claim.”
His loss is a big blow to manager Ger Cunningham - who will have to plan for 2016 without one of his most talented players.
The Dublin hurling panel is currently undergoing an overhaul, Simon Lambert and Alan Nolan were axed last weekend. There are also question marks about Conal Keaney’s involvement.
The veteran Ballyboden St Endas dual star is considering retirement and has yet to make a decision on his inter-county future.
