St Patrick's Athletic have significantly strengthened their side after confirming the capture of Simon Madden.
Shamrock Rovers expressed their shock on social media after the club confirmed he was leaving, the wording of their communications suggested that it was their decision to let him go.
The defender started all but one of the Hoops 32 SSE Airtricity League games last season and was one of their most consistent performers.
The 29-year-old's arrival at Richmond Park comes just days after Thomas Byrne moved from Drogheda United.
The Saints are still hoping to re-sign defender Jordi Balk, who is being linked with a move to Rovers this week. They have also secured the services of Lee Desmond and Michael Barker who both signed new deals for 2018.

Speaking to stpatsfc.com about the addition of the former Cherry Orchard youth, Pat’s manager Liam Buckley believes the Saints have added one of the best defenders in the league to his squad.
"Signing Simon is a massive boost to us as he’s a very strong defender. He has huge experience having played in the league for over 8 years and that will rub off on the other lads in the squad. We need strong competition for places across the team and Simon will help raise standards as he is a top class pro.
“When we heard that Simon became available, it was a no-brainer to try and get him in and we’re delighted to have him here at the club.”
