Silverstone set to host two Formula One races in July and August

Silverstone has agreed terms with Formula 1 to hold two races on consecutive weekends in July and August.

They'll be run behind closed doors with strict safety protocols in place to comply with all UK government safety regulations amid the coronavirus pandemic.

A contract is expected to be signed as early as next week with the races likely to take place on July 26th and August 2nd.

"I'm delighted we've got an agreement in principle to host not one but two Formula 1 races at Silverstone this summer," said Stuart Pringle, Silverstone's managing director, of the agreement.

"It's great news for Silverstone, it's great news for the championship. It is of course entirely subject to the government approving it and the situation nationally allowing sport behind closed doors to take place. It's very important I make that caveat clear."

F1 plans to start the season with a similar double header at the Red Bull Ring in Austria over the first two weeks of July.

“We’re targeting a start to racing in Europe through July, August and beginning of September, with the first race taking place in Austria on 3-5 July weekend, Formula One chief Chase Carey said of their plans to get the season underway.

“September, October and November, would see us race in Eurasia, Asia and the Americas, finishing the season in the Gulf in December with Bahrain before the traditional finale in Abu Dhabi, having completed between 15-18 races.

“We will publish our finalised calendar as soon as we possibly can.”
