Shane Long remains a major doubt for the Republic of Ireland's crucial Euro 2016 playoff with Bosnia Herzegovina next week.

He suffered an ankle injury in the qualifier defeat to Poland last month.

And the striker is yet to return to training with his club Southampton.

That means he's unlikely to feature in their Premier League clash with Sunderland this weekend-their last game before the international break.

The first leg of the playoff takes place next Friday, 13th November in Bosnia, with the return leg taking place the following Monday at the Aviva.

In better news, the Boys in Green have jumped 12 places in the latest FIFA World Rankings.

The qualifier win over Germany last month has catapulted Martin O'Neill's men up to 42nd place.

Bosnia are 20th, while Belgium are top ahead of Germany in second and Argentina in third.

Northern Ireland's qualification for Euro 2016 has moved them up to 29th, with Scotland 44th, Wales 15th and England ninth.
