Seamus Power surges to a 66, in contention at Rocket Mortgage Classic

A second round 66 has seen Seamus Power move into contention at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

The Waterford golfer carded six birdies as he kept his card blemish-free en route to his 6-under par round.

By the time he'd parred his final hole, Power found himself on 11-under par and in a share of the lead in Detroit.

Power was joined on that mark by Bryson DeChambeau, Matthew Wolff and Mark Hubbard.

American duo Webb Simpson and Chris Kirk lead on 12-under.

Back-to-back bogey-free rounds are a long way removed from the same tournament twelve months ago when Power missed the cut following rounds of 73 and 77.

"Last year was one of those tournaments I was really struggling," Power said after his second round on Friday, "And it was probably one of those things that I didn't really learn a whole lot.

He added, "I knew I liked the golf course as soon as I got here last year, so I was kind of keeping that in mind more than how I played last year.

"It's a course - if you can drive it well - you're going to have plenty of chances. You can reach some par-5s and you've got some wedges.

"That was the big focus on Tuesday, Wednesday - trying to make sure the driver is in as good a spot as possible."

Power is certainly driving it well, with an average distance of 318-yards on Friday. His accuracy off the tee was just north of 71 per cent.

DeChambeau is hoping his big hitting can keep him in contention throughout the weekend.

"If I can make birdie on all the par-5s at the weekend - that's 8-under right there," the American said after his round.

"Make a couple of birdies on some short par-4s, that would be a good number, something like that."
