Dubliner Scott Evans has beaten Mark Zwiebler 2-1 in his opening Badminton match at the Olympics.
Making his third appearance at the Games, the veteran of Beijing 2008 and London 2012 was facing the man that eliminated him 8 years ago.
It was a hard fought victory as Evans had to recover from a first set loss on the way to his 9-12, 21-17, 21-7 victory.
The German started brightly and went 11-2 up in the first game. The Dundrum native got it back to 19-8 but lost the first set 21-9.
A strong finish to the set saw him start on the front foot at the change of ends. He still trailed 11-7 at the break despite cutting out many of the unforced errors that hampered him in the first set.
The 28-year-old battled back in the second set to tie it up 12-12. He took the game 21-17 to sent it to a deciding set.
Zwiebler took a 3-0 advantage before Evans took the game to him, winning eleven points in a row to turn the deciding set around and take a 15-6 lead.
He then made Irish Olympic history as he took the set 21-7, to register Ireland's first ever Badminton win at the games.
He’ll now faces Brazil's Ygor Coelho de Oliveira tomorrow, a win will send Evans into the last 16.
