Eoin Reddan has emerged as a huge doubt for Ireland's Six Nations opener against Scotland this Sunday.

There was some confusion in the Irish camp this afternoon with the IRFU stating originally that it looked like Reddan would be "unavailable for selection" after injuring his calf muscle in training yesterday.

The Union also revealed that Isaac Boss had been drafted into Joe Schmidt's 34-man squad as back up.

That status changed just moments later and the Leinster man is now considered as doubtful for the Scots visit and Boss' inclusion is just a precaution.

There are no other injury concerns ahead of Schmidt's team announcement on Friday.

Mike McCarthy is clear to play despite getting 23 stitches after his face was cut open in a ruck playing for Leinster against the Ospreys in the last round of the Heineken Cup.

The lock will wear protective cover if he takes to the field.
