Former Republic of Ireland midfielder Keith Andrews believes there is a role for Robbie Keane in the next set-up just not as the assistant manager.
A dream team of Mick McCarthy and Keane has emerged as the bookies favourites to replace Martin O'Neill and Roy Keane.
Support has snowballed for Kenny to be the next Republic of Ireland manager in the last 24 hours according to Boylesports.
McCarthy is at odds of 8/11 while Kenny has been backed in 2/1. Having won five League of Ireland titles Kenny is on the FAI's radar, they were considering him as a replacement to Noel King as manager of the U21's. The Dubliner told the Dundalk Democrat on Thursday:
"I don't have a dream team. I think, ultimately I'm a football coach and I have great respect for all the players at Dundalk and for everyone connected to the club."
"I think managing your country is the ultimate honour. If you offered me the job of managing Real Madrid or Barcelona or Ireland, I would choose to manage Ireland, because it's the greatest honour you can have as an Irishman."
Andrews favours the appointment of McCarthy as next Ireland manager but feels Keane could make a valuable contribution, but not in the role of assistant manager:
"Not doing press conference every month to promote his own agenda and to keep him relevant and in the spotlight which was going on [with Roy Keane].
"Which was farcical, more reporters turning up for the assistant manager's press conference than the manager's for that soundbite.
"As long as its controlled, there should be a role if he wants it, should it be as assistant manager? No in my opinion, but I think he could be part of it."
