Mick McCarthy has agreed a deal to become the new manager of the Republic of Ireland and an announcement is expected by the end of this weekend.

The 59-year old met with FAI officials today, as they seek a replacement for Martin O'Neill whose five-year tenure came to an end on Wednesday.

His long-time No 2 Terry Connor is slated to be his assistant, with a role set to be found for Ireland's record goalscorer Robbie Keane in the backroom team.

Should his appointment be confirmed, it would be McCarthy's second spell in charge of Ireland, having previously been in charge between 1996 and 2002.

McCarthy has been out of work since April, having left Championship club Ipswich.

His previous spell with Ireland saw him lead the team to qualification for the 2002 World Cup, with the team reaching the first knockout round, exiting the tournament in a penalty shootout defeat to Spain.

McCarthy joined us in studio in September and when asked whether he still had "unfinished business" with Ireland, he said, "I look back on my time fondly and as a success but I don't look back thinking I've got unfinished business no."
