Former Mayo star Andy Moran is to be put forward for ratification as Letrim's next senior football manager.

The 2017 Footballer of the Year is the preferred candidate to fill the vacancy left by Terry Hyland's departure after three years in charge this summer.

Leitrim failed to win a game in Division Four in 2021 and were beaten by Mayo by 24-points in the Connacht Senior Football Championship.

Former Galway manager Kevin Walsh was also strongly linked with the position but Leitrim have opted to hand Moran his first senior inter-county management job.

The Football Pod co-host is working as joint-manager of his home club Ballaghaderreen this year and he was reportedly also in the running for the manager's position in Longford.

The 37-year-old retired from inter-county football in 2019 after making 85 Championship appearances for Mayo, winning eight Connacht titles and a National Football League.

Moran's Ballaghaderreen clubmate and ex Mayo under-20 boss Michael Solan will be his assistant manager in Leitrim with ex Leitrim players Barry McWeeney and James Glancy his selectors.  Glancy and McWeeney won a Sigerson Cup alongside Moran with IT Sligo in 2005.

He'll now look to emulate the success of fellow Mayo man John O'Mahony, who oversaw Leitrim's only Connacht Senior Football success in 1994.
