Andre Marriner will get the chance to test his eyesight at another Premier League match this Saturday. The short-sighted ref who mistakenly sent-off Arsenal fullback Kieran Gibbs against Chelsea is set to take charge of Southampton versus Newcastle.
The latest in a long line of blunders by the man in black happened early in Arsenal's 6-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge at the weekend after Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain had handled a shot from Blues midfielder Eden Hazard. Despite pleas of guilt from the Gunners midfielder, Marriner flashed his red at Gibbs.
Both players have escaped any punishment from the Football Association. The FA has agreed that Gibbs was the victim of mistaken identity, and shouldn't have been sent off by the ref. His red card was transferred to Chamberlain, whose handball led to a penalty. Arsenal subsequently appealed that dismissal, and an independent commission has upheld that claim.
