Manchester City have been crowned as Premier League champions after rivals Manchester United lost to West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford.

City returned to winning ways on Saturday by beating Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley to create a 16-point gap at the top of the table.

But United’s failure to avoid defeat against rock bottom West Brom means City boss Pep Guardiola can add an English domestic title to go with his Spanish and German league triumphs.

City, having secured the title, will be looking to break two particular milestones in the remaining weeks of the season.

Guardiola’s side need nine points from their final five games to surpass Chelsea’s Premier League record for most points in a single season – 95.

And a minimum of four wins and a draw from fixtures with Huddersfield, Swansea, Brighton (all home), West Ham and Southampton (both away), will see City claim 100 points.

Speaking to Richie McCormack at the full time whistle, Kevin Kilbane feels United’s failings should not dilute Manchester City’s achievement.

“I wouldn’t say that [about United’s loss undermining the strength of the Premier League],” Kilbane said.

“I think United have great attacking players. I certainly think we’ve got the best coaches around in world football in the Premier League – I just think its [Jose] Mourinho’s mindset.

“He’s good in big games, he’s good tactically in big games, but you would question across a whole season how he would set up a side to go and hurt teams and go and open them up.

“He needs to change his mindset across the course of next season if he’s seriously going to challenge Manchester City.

“I wouldn’t suggest [United’ s result today] is a bad reflection of the Premier League across the board. I think the league is as strong as ever as is its standing in European football as well.”
