Manchester United gave themselves a fighting chance of reaching the Champions League semi finals.
United drew one all with Bayern Munich in this quarter final first leg at Old Trafford.
After a scoreless first half during which Danny Welbeck fluffed his lines when he was clean through on goal, United took the lead in the 58th minute.
A left wing corner was floated across the area and there was Nemanja Vidic backing away ever so slightly and heading past Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer for the opener.
But Bayern were in never say die mode and equalised eight minutes later.
A brilliant free flowing move saw Arjen Robben release the overlapping right back Rafinha.
The Brazilian banged over a right wing cross which substitute Mario Mandzukic - cleverly backing away at the far post - nodded down for skipper Bastian Schweinsteiger to drill home a left footed effort into the top corner.
Schweinsteiger - who had been booked in the 61st minute - blotted his copybook in the 90th minute when he was sent off for picking up a second yellow for a foul on Wayne Rooney.
Also missing the second leg will be Javi Martinez who picked up his second yellow of the competition.
The second leg is at the Allianz Arena in Munich tomorrow week.
In the other match Atletico Madrid's Koke and Neymar of Barcelona exchanged goals in a 1-1 draw at the Nou Camp.
