Lindelof wants to stay at United despite reported Barcelona interest

Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof has played down talk linking him with a summer move to Barcelona.

The 24-year-old Swedish international has become a key player in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side but his agent suggested last week that he could swap Old Trafford for the Nou Camp.

When asked about whether Barcelona were interested in signing his client, Hasan Cetinkaya claimed that Lindelof "is in the orbit of a great European club, but leaving United depends on the English club".

Speaking at a press conference in Perth today, Lindelof ruled out a switch this summer.

"I'm very, very happy to be a Manchester United player.

"I'm excited for the new season to start. That's my answer. I'm very happy here."

Lindelof is set to play his first pre-season of the campaign when United take on Leeds tomorrow.

"It's my third season here now, I've been through it," he added.

"I know what it is to sign for this club and to play for it, and of course to get a little bit of criticism sometimes. That's part of the game."

United are closing in on the signing of England defender Harry Maguire from Leicester and Solskjaer says his current centre-backs will need to fight for their futures at the club.

"Whoever performs will be part of the team and whoever doesn't they have got a fight to get back in. There's been loads of speculation, but I can't really say anything. But we will work to find a relationship with the ones we've got.

"Axel has got a great chance of staying here and playing. He had a great season last year. It was a stop-start season with injuries, but he's really proven that he is capable of playing at that level, he got promoted with Villa and he's come back very strong, focused. He did well in the first game here, so he's one of the young, exciting players that I can't wait to see more."
