Leeds United have renamed the East Stand at Elland Road in honour of former Republic of Ireland manager, Jack Charlton.

The club's former defender passed away in July aged 85.

A World Cup-winner with England, Charlton made a record number of appearances for Leeds

He helped them win the First Division title in 1969 and FA Cup in 1972.

Charlton joins fellow Leeds icons Don Revie, Norman Hunter and John Charles in having stands named after them at Elland Road. Outside the stadium stands a statue of former captain Billy Bremner.

One of his granddaughters, Emma Wilkinson was on hand for the unveiling, telling the club's website, "Obviously because of coronavirus restrictions, it's a shame more of us can't be here.

"But on behalf of my Grandma Pat, my Grandma and Granddad's three children - John, Peter and Debbie - and the rest of our family, I just wanted to say a few things about this.

"It is also a real shame that fans aren't able to sit in this stand and look out at the Norman Hunter, the Don Revie and the John Charles Stand and reminisce about the great teams and players of the past, whilst also enjoying the current team playing in the top flight of English football. Hopefully that day will come soon when it's safe to do so.

"Grandad Jack's 23-years at Leeds helped shape the rest of his life, and the rest of his career.

"He never stopped following Leeds, through its ups and its downs. He would always ask how they did, always kept an eye.

"And we have been completely overwhelmed by the tributes that people have given to him since he died.

"Since Grandad's death we cannot thank people enough for what they've said about him, the stories they've shared, the memories they've shared.

"And so, for us to have this we're very proud that this will serve as a lasting tribute to him, and a reminder for generations to come - not just of what he gave to Leeds, but of what Leeds gave to him."

Angus Kinnear, CEO at Leeds United said: “The contribution made by Jack Charlton to Leeds United and the game of football is immeasurable.

“It is only right that we name a stand in his memory, he is an icon.

“We thank Hisense for giving us the go ahead to name the East Stand after Jack alongside their sponsorship and we are looking forward to the day fans return to Elland Road to celebrate the life of Jack along with Norman Hunter and Trevor Cherry.”
